We are an eight-doctor GP practice based in Whitley Bay, providing personalised care to our patients and the local community.
You can book appointments by phone or online, order repeat prescriptions, and access a range of NHS services through us. If you need help urgently, call 999 for emergencies or 111 for urgent medical advice when we are closed.
Same-day appointments are available Monday to Friday. Call us on 0191 253 1113 from 8am to request a same-day appointment — lines open promptly at 8am, so please ring as early as possible. You can also come into the surgery in person from 8am to book. We will always try to see you as soon as possible. If the surgery is closed and you need urgent medical help, call NHS 111. In a life-threatening emergency, call 999 immediately.
For non-urgent concerns, you can book a future-dated appointment with your named GP or another doctor. A small number of routine appointments are bookable online via the SystmOnline patient portal — use the online services link on our homepage. Most routine appointments are available by calling 0191 253 1113 during opening hours, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. We encourage you to see your named GP whenever possible to support continuity of care.
If you cannot attend your appointment, please cancel it as soon as possible so it can be offered to another patient. To cancel, call us on 0191 253 1113 during opening hours, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. You may also be able to cancel online via SystmOnline if you are registered for online services. Please do not simply not attend — missed appointments waste NHS resources and affect other patients who need care.
Please nominate a preferred pharmacy so your prescriptions can be sent directly to them by Electronic Prescribing. You can order repeat prescriptions online through SystmOnline — use the online services link on our homepage. Please allow at least 2 working days before collecting. We do not accept prescription requests by telephone except for patients who are housebound and registered on our housebound list — these patients may call the surgery after 10am.
A fit note (sometimes called a sick note or Statement of Fitness for Work) is issued by a GP when you are unwell and unable to work. You may need to make an appointment to discuss your fitness for work with your GP. For the first 7 days of sickness, you do not need a fit note — you can self-certify using an SC2 form, available from your employer or on GOV.UK. For longer absences, call 0191 253 1113 to arrange an appointment
If you have been referred to a hospital specialist or another service and want an update on your referral, please call us on 0191 253 1113 and ask to speak to the receptionist for your named GP. You can also check the status of NHS referrals through the NHS e-Referral Service online. Please allow sufficient time for your referral to be processed before contacting us — hospital waiting times vary. Our admin team will do their best to help.
For non-medical queries — such as updating your contact details, requesting medical records, asking about test results, changing your named GP, or a general enquiry — please call us on 0191 253 1113 during opening hours. For test results, please ring after 2pm and ask for the receptionist covering your named GP. Blood test results normally take 7 days to return to the practice; X-ray results take at least 2 weeks. You can also contact us in person at reception.
Book a travel health appointment with one of our practice nurses before travelling abroad. Our nurses can advise on recommended vaccinations, malaria prevention tablets, and up-to-date country-specific health requirements. Please book approximately 2 months before your travel date to allow time for any course of vaccines to be completed. Some travel vaccines are not available on the NHS and may have a charge — please ask at reception for the current fee list. Contact us on 0191 253 1113.
We are currently unable to accept new patient registrations. Please check our website for updates or contact us on 0191 253 1113 for the latest position. When registrations reopen, you can register if you live within our catchment area. Use the postcode checker on our New Patients Page to confirm you are within our boundary. For general information on registering with a GP in England, visit https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/gps/how-to-register-with-a-gp-surgery/.
Evening and weekend appointments are available through the Whitley Bay Primary Care Network (PCN) Extended Hours Service. These appointments are with local GPs, nurses, or healthcare assistants who can access your medical records. Appointments are held at local hub practices in Whitley Bay — not at our surgery. All extended hours appointments are pre-bookable. If you need an appointment outside normal hours, call us on 0191 253 1113 and we will try to book you into an available slot.
We offer a range of NHS vaccinations including seasonal flu jabs, childhood immunisations, travel vaccines, and COVID-19 vaccinations when available. Flu vaccination: patients aged 65 and over and those in clinical at-risk groups will receive an invitation letter between August and October each year. Childhood immunisations: contact us to book with a practice nurse. Travel vaccines: book at least 2 months before travel. For all vaccination enquiries, call 0191 253 1113 or ask at reception.
To get the results of a blood test, X-ray, or other investigation, please call us on 0191 253 1113 after 2pm. Ask to speak to the receptionist covering your named GP. Blood test results normally reach us within 7 days. X-ray results take at least 2 weeks. You may also be able to view some test results through the NHS App or SystmOnline if you have online access set up. The doctor will contact you directly if your results need urgent action.
Home visits are for patients who are housebound or too unwell to come to the surgery safely. If you need a home visit, please call 0191 253 1113 before 10am if possible. The GP will assess whether a home visit is appropriate. Please do not request a home visit simply because attending the surgery is inconvenient — visits take significantly more time than a surgery appointment and we want to make sure this service is available for those who genuinely need it.
We take all feedback seriously and use it to improve our services. If you have a complaint or concern, please contact us as soon as possible. You can speak to the practice manager in person, by phone on 0191 253 1113, or write to us at 165 Whitley Road, Whitley Bay, NE26 2DN. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact NHS England or the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. We also welcome positive suggestions on how we can improve.
You have the right to access your medical records under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. To request access, contact us in writing or by phone on 0191 253 1113. Some records may also be available to view through the NHS App or SystmOnline. We aim to process subject access requests within one calendar month. For information about how we use your data, please read our Privacy Notice or at reception.
You can do a simple test at home to find out if you have hepatitis C.
Hepatitis C is a virus that affects your liver. It can be cured by taking a course of tablets.
Lots of people have hepatitis C without knowing. Even if you do not know you have it, it can damage your liver and can sometimes lead to life-threatening conditions like liver cancer or liver failure.
Testing and Treatment You can do a free, confidential hepatitis C test at home. You prick your finger to get some blood and then send the blood to get tested.
This is called self-sampling. Please note, this service is only available for people aged over 18 years old, with an address in England. Hepatitis C can be treated with a free course of tablets from the NHS.
For most people, hepatitis C is cured after taking the tablets for 8-12 weeks.
Modern hepatitis C treatment is simple to take and usually has very few side effects. Hepatitis C used to be treated with Interferon injections together with tablets or capsules.
All ambulance bookings are now done directly through the North East Ambulance Service. To arrange an ambulance to get you to a hospital appointment please telephone 0191 215 15 15.
Where possible ring two weeks in advance of your appointment.
The Practice runs a personalised list system which means upon registering you and your family members will always see the same GP unless he/she is on annual leave.
We do appreciate though that on rare occasions patients sometimes may wish to change GP’s within the practice whilst staying on the surgery list. In order to do this you would need to write in to the Practice Manager requesting a change of GP. The Practice Manager will then run an audit and see which other GP Partners have spaces on their lists and make the change if possible.
Whilst we will always strive to accommodate such requests it should be noted that frequent changes of GP Partner is not practical nor advisable for your continuity of care. All GP Partners adhere to the same strict NHS guidelines in relation to referrals and prescribing. For patients who may make frequent requests to change their registered GP it may be advisable to register at another GP Practice in the area.
Book and manage appointments, order repeat prescriptions, and view your medical record online. Registering required. Visit: https://systmonline.tpp-uk.com/
Submit a medical or administrative query online at any time. Your query will be reviewed and you will receive a response from the practice, usually by the end of the next working day https://whitleybayhealthcentre.webgp.com/
